COURSE DESCRIPTION
PSY 428 explores
the realm of psychopathology, including theories of dysfunctional
behavior, treatment of behavior disorders, testing, diagnosis, and
social considerations.
COURSE GOALS
1) The student will understand the various theories describing
abnormal behavior
2)
The student will understand various diagnostic approaches and be
familiar with the DSM-IV
3)
The student will understand various therapeutic approaches
COURSE
EXPECTATIONS AND EVALUATION
Write a 5-7 page summary of:
•History, issues and problems in Psychopathology
•Emotional disorders, the effects of stress
•Social problems, substance use and abuse
•Life span disorders, age sensitive problems
•Psychotherapy and medical therapy 40%
PROJECT
Write a comprehensive paper detailing a
major approach to Substance Abuse Counseling. Include; research,
history, therapeutic techniques, support systems, medications,
etc. 15-20 pages minimum. - 40%
EXAM
There will be one written exam, provided by the Instructor when
all written coursework has been completed. It will be an open-book
exam consisting of multiple-choice, short answer, and essay length
questions. The student will have one week after receiving the exam
to complete the exam and return it to the Instructor. –
20%
COURSE PREREQUISITE: A bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement for admission to this course of study.
COURSE DELIVERY: This course shall be delivered completely through online interaction via the Internet or other acceptable distance learning
medium(s). Due to this being a non-traditional program, traditional classroom residency is not required. Therefore, you are expected to independently read and analyze the subject matter with me performing the roles of an advisor and mentor.
