COURSE DESCRIPTION
PSY 419 provides an analysis of the
biological, cultural, social and emotional aspects of development
from conception through adolescence. Emphasis will be placed on
the processes underlying the acquisition and development of
thought and behavior throughout the developmental period. At the
conclusion of Psy 419 the student will have developed knowledge of
Human Development and understanding and skills in assisting the
development of children through adolescence.
COURSE GOALS
1) The student will understand biological development from
conception through puberty
2) The student will understand the development of language and
thought in children
3) The student will understand approaches to parenting and the
likely results of each
4) The student will understand and appreciate the issues and
research in the field of Human Development
5) The student will develop life enhancing attitudes
COURSE EXPECTATIONS AND
EVALUATION
Read each chapter and write a brief (1-2 page) outline summary of
each. – 20%
PROJECT
Write a paper, 18-20 pages, comparing the developmental
theories and research of: Piaget, Eriksson, and Behaviorism. 40%
EXAM
There will be one written exam, provided by the Instructor when
all written coursework has been completed. It will be an open-book
exam consisting of multiple-choice, short answer, and essay length
questions. The student will have one week after receiving the exam
to complete the exam and return it to the Instructor. – 40%
COURSE PREREQUISITE: A bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement for admission to this course of study.
COURSE DELIVERY: This course shall be delivered completely through online interaction via the Internet or other acceptable distance learning
medium(s). Due to this being a non-traditional program, traditional classroom residency is not required. Therefore, you are expected to independently read and analyze the subject matter with me performing the roles of an advisor and mentor.
