COURSE DESCRIPTION
Social Psychology is the study of large groups of people and how
they act and interact. PSY 401 provides an overview of scientific
theory and research in the major topics of social psychology.
Students will gain an understanding of the powerful social
influences of their own behavior and the behavior of others in
ordinary situations.
PSY 401 will include study of:
1. What Social Psychology is
2. Research Methodology
3. Aggression
4. Social Influence
5. Attitude Change
6. Affiliation and Attraction
7. Groups and Group Behavior.
8. Social Norms
9. Stereotyping and Prejudice
10. Culture and Personality
COURSE EXPECTATIONS AND EVALUATION
The student will write a one to two page review of each of the
10 Social Psychology topics listed above. Focus on how the topic
links to social psychology, large group behavior, predicting
behavior, and changing behavior. Cite current research in each
area. – 30%
EXAM
There will be one written exam, provided by the Instructor when
all written coursework has been completed. It will be an open-book
exam consisting of multiple-choice, short answer, and essay length
questions. The student will have one week after receiving the exam
to complete the exam and return it to the Instructor. – 40%
PROJECT
Choose a topic relating to one of ten areas of social psychology
listed above, with approval of the instructor, and write a 10-15
page typed paper exploring current research, practical application
of the research results, and a critique of the methods used. The
student may include personal ideas and beliefs as long as they are
properly labeled as such. - 30%
COURSE PREREQUISITE: A bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement for admission to this course of study.
COURSE DELIVERY: This course shall be delivered completely through online interaction via the Internet or other acceptable distance learning
medium(s). Due to this being a non-traditional program, traditional classroom residency is not required. Therefore, you are expected to independently read and analyze the subject matter with me performing the roles of an advisor and mentor.
